Hyperbaric Therapy and Fibromyalgia
Hyperbaric Wellness is a new center for hyperbaric chamber therapy located on Venice Blvd. in West Los Angeles. With this first newsletter we happily launch our mission to inform the community about the benefits of hyperbaric therapy.

We explain the two different types of hyperbaric therapy and discuss its value in treating pain and fibromyalgia.

There are two types of hyperbaric therapy. Hyperbaric chamber therapy (HBT) consists of lying down for an hour in a chamber that provides increased atmospheric pressure equivalent to diving 9 feet below sea level.  Hyperbaric oxygen chamber therapy (HBOT) involves additional pressure (up to 60 feet below sea level) and the addition of pure oxygen.

Research indicates a similar level of effectiveness between the two types of hyperbaric therapies.

One research study sponsored by the Canadian government (The Lancet, Vol 357, Feb. 24, 2001) compared the results of HBOT and HBT for children with cerebral palsy, a severe brain disorder. Researchers assumed that the mild portable chambers would prove to be less effective than full-pressure chambers and could be disqualified as a valid form of treatment for this condition.  To their surprise, they found that the mild hyperbaric chambers were every bit as effective in bringing about clinically significant improvements as the high-pressure oxygen chambers.

Hyperbaric Wellness offers a mild-pressure hyperbaric chamber similar to the one pictured here.

Research on hyperbaric therapy shows that it is a great way to treat pain conditions including fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia Syndrome consists of pain and inflammation of the muscles and connective tissues.  Other core symptoms include debilitating fatigue, sleep disturbance and joint stiffness. Depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder are commonly present.

A 2004 study published in the Journal of Internal Medical Research May-Jun; 32(3):263-7 was performed by doctors at the Haydarpasa Military Teaching Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey.

They conducted a randomized controlled study to evaluate the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in fibromyalgia (sample size =26; control group size= 24). Subjective level of pain, tender points and pain threshold were assessed before and after the first and fifteenth sessions of therapy.

Researchers concluded that hyperbaric oxygen therapy has an important role in managing fibromyalgia.

There was a significant reduction in tender points and subjective pain scores, and a significant increase in pain threshold of the hyperbaric therapy group after the first and fifteenth sessions. There was also a significant difference between the therapy and control groups on all measures after the first session, except for the subjective pain scores, probably due to the placebo effect.

If you know of anyone who suffers from fibromyalgia or a pain condition, please inform them about Hyperbaric Wellness. During the month of February they will receive a special discount of 50% off their first session!
